Hi, I’m Tillie! I recently graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM with an MFA in Cultural Administration. My degree work centered on equitable and sensitive leadership and administration in arts organizations and museums and I got to develop a thesis project on earrings!
I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. I started bead weaving and making earrings around the age of ten – coincidentally around the same age all of my relatives started to receive gifts of jewelry for every occasion.
Recently, I found one of the first pairs of beaded earrings I made in my aunt’s jewelry box after she passed away. It underlined for me how important it is to create and to celebrate our creating and our creations. Art can have a lasting impact, regardless of ‘quality.’ I think it does our soul good to remember that.
